Everyone meet Julia!
Julia is soaring. Quite literally, she embraces her community with open arms, smiling through the inevitable shivers that come with having a summer-themed photoshoot in late November. This picture was just one of the fantastic shots that Mel Carter, a local photographer in town who also happened to be featured in our most recent edition of the magazine, captured as one of Julia’s senior photos.
As a senior this year, Julia is the youngest member of the Strait Up collective, and proud of it. This year marks her first as an official staff member, although she wrote a few standalone pieces as a junior, one being about her identity and rare perspective as an Asian-American assimilated into white culture here in Port Townsend. The article was inspired by and written in light of the rise in Asian-American hate crimes taking place in the U.S. at the time. Aside from her mixed ethnicities, artistry plays an integral role in the person Julia is. She loves to write, draw, paint, act, and make music in her free time. She’s also a huge lover of Thai food, thrifting, and collecting old records to play on her turntable––a current vinyl gem of hers is Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”.
